Seeing is beleiving

We are very blessed to have received a video from a dear lady who traveled to Ling's orphanage in 2008. She sent us about 30 minutes of video of the orphanage with over 5 minutes of Ling included! The video that she sent on DVD is actually much clearer than it appears on our blog. I have trimmed several minutes of the video and posted it here. The video shows Ling playing with and comforting several small children. It is such a blessing to see her caring for others in her situation. We have been told that she is a very loving and caring young lady and we can see that in the video. Carolyn and I debated if Ling had some sort of "tick". If you watch her closely, it appears that her head "jerks/twitches" somewhat. I think we came to the conclusion that it was probably that she was just facing a very large window and she was "fighting" the glare. One of the ladies that has visited the orphanage several times this year says that she refuses to wear sunglasses.

  1. She's a beautiful young lady. Lots of kids with albinism hold their heads in a certain position in order to find their focal point. My daughter did this a lot before her eye surgery. For her, she would tilt her head down and look up. This dampened her nystagmus and made it slightly easier to focus. It is possible Ling is self-correcting her vision, trying to get a clearer view of what is going on. It also seems that she is inclining her head to hear better.

Often, we'll look at a person's mouth and eyes as they speak. This gives us a clearer idea of the meaning behind the words. Because Ling's vision isn't clear, she may be tilting her head to hear the tonal changes.

  2. Your are probably right Shirlee. Our youngest son with Albinism did try find his Null point in a similar fashion before his surgery.

  3. I don't know anything about albinism (so forgive my ignorance!) I watched the video before I read what you read and I "assumed" she might be a little nervous - as is the way with girls her age! I think Ling is so beautiful and not knowing anything about you or your family - I can only imagine how blessed you will be to have her as part of your life, your family. Congratulations!

  4. My daughter does that same rapid eye blinking I noticed Ling doing in the video - its a nervous habit she has. Shae will sometimes also do it at night when she's trying to find the right words to say to tell me about her day. And yes, Ling is facing towards a window and the glare is brutal.

Ling is so very beautiful!! Where Shirley's Cheeky is my daughter's younger self...Ling is the older version of Shae! She has the same grace and pose...its wonderful to see!!
